So I thought I scored a decent deal for my son's one legger 8 3/4 for his duster at a swap meet today the trouble is when I bought it I couldn't 100% identify if it was a 8 3/4 or 9 1/4 so when I got home I put it on the bench beside another sure grip my other son has and the one I bought is taller the ring gear from the 8 3/4 we had fits on the new sure grip but it's taller the one I bought is on the left what do you think?

well the "new" one is a cone clutch limited slip. the old one is an Eaton style replaceable clutch disks limited slip(more desirable). can't tell you the app for the new one.

9 1/4
Looks like it's 8 and3/8 from one end to the other on the 9 1/4 overall width.

By the way that pinhole looks like it started to egg shape. You might want to check that.

I can get a 8 3/4 ring gear on it too.

Thanks guys I know the one I bought is the cone style, which is better than a open and this is just a cruiser with a 318 no burn outs my kid cant afford the tires lol, but Jadaharbi I think you are right as your measurements match but would nice to know for sure if it is a 9 1/4 as I have a buyer if it is, k305 is the only legible number on it there looks like there might have been a Chrysler part number but not legible enough to read, maybe a partial

I would say it is for an older 9 and a quarter before they had the tone ring on them for the ABS.

Did you check the hole that the pin goes through to see if it was egg-shaped?

I have a unit like yours in the rear end under my wife's 78 little red express truck.

The pin hole is good think it's just the photo angle the whole unit looks pretty clean and tight too bad for me and my kid but that's the risk you take when you make decisions under pressure but no big deal I know a couple people with 9 1/4 opens that will buy it for what I paid for it some times the best way to learn is through mistakes

other than the pin hole issue, the thing to look for: are the tapers galled? They can be reground, but it requires a lathe and a tool post grinder. Like 45 yrs ago, I bought a used warranty-replaced one from some mail order surplus equipment, Couch Racing in Detroit I think, for like $10 or $15. When I pulled it apart it was galled up, so I used the tooling at work to regrind it. Came out surprisingly well, still have it in my Dustpan.

Ok thanks guys, 9 1/4 confirmed, 31 splines and tape measure same as jahadarabi example ( boy that's hard to spell ), and no visual gulling I see, over all unit looks clean, you know my gut told me this was not a 8 3/4, you should always go with your gut!, anyway hopefully I get it sold before the next swap meet in a couple weeks so I can re-hunt!

should still be fair market for it. It would probably fit 1/2t pickups, vans, some 9-1/4 equipped pass cars.
