If I removed my e-brake, do I need my spreaders bars?

Hey All:

I got rid of the E-brake on my rear drums on my 71 Dart. I'd like to get rid of the spreader bars too, since they are hitting my screw in studs on the new axles. Can I do this without certain death?

Any help is appreciated!

Steve

I have taken them out of all my drag cars. No problems. they do nothing for braking. e-brake only

If you take off the ebrake cables, you also should remove:
1) the spreader bars
2) the ebrake levers (arms from pivot to cable attach point)

There are 2 type of arms. 1 that uses a pin / retainer (horse shoe clip) and the second uses a tab off the arm, that just slides into a hole in the shoe.

Without the bars (and spring), either way, the pin type will rattle around, AND the tab type may actually fall off the secondary shoe, binding up the rear brakes.

I had the same problem with my moser axles. They have bolts that screw in from the back and just barely hit the spreader. I have a 4 speed so I needed the e-brake. It was easy enough to just grind a little notch in the spreader, or you could grind down the back of the bolt heads. Either way you could still keep the e-brake if you wanted.
