I think they painted iron ones, but I think they left aluminum ones as-cast. I'm not 100% sure on that, but the two aluminum ones I have only had engine overspray on 'em when I got em.

Exactly. Early cast bells were fully painted the color of the engine.
 
The aluminum bell from my 68 valiant 3 on the tree was painted engine color, as were both dust covers. The trans was bare aluminum.

the one that came out of my dart which i didnt take out looks like just over spray a little. so i didnt know if someone had cleaned it up at some point or what.
