I recieved this from Summitt Racing yesterday. I think all of us need to respond to this. It could really impact our hobby.

Washington lawmakers are drafting a large economic stimulus package to help create jobs and rebuild infrastructure. They want to include a nationwide scrappage program which would give U.S. tax dollars to consumers who turn-in older cars to have them crushed, as a misguided attempt to spur new car sales. The lawmakers need to scrap this idea.

The stimulus package is being drafted right now. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) wants to introduce the bill on January 6 and have it approved by Congress by January 20, so that President Obama can sign it into law after he is inaugurated.

Feel free to use any of the statements below as a starting point for your message to Speaker Pelosi.
 • I am [calling/writing] to urge lawmakers not to include a “Cash for Clunkers” provision in the economic stimulus bill. Owners who turn in vehicles for crushing would receive a "minimal" payment to purchase a new car. This is a misguided attempt to spur car sales and claim that the country’s air quality or fleet fuel mileage is being improved.
 • I work for [company name] located in [city and state]. My company is part of the specialty automotive industry, an industry which enables consumers to enhance their vehicle’s appearance, performance, comfort, convenience and safety. “Cash for Clunkers” programs deny our small businesses the availability of older cars necessary to develop and market their products and services. The programs will hurt my company and our customers.
 • “Cash for Clunkers” programs threaten enthusiasts nationwide with the loss of valuable parts and parts-cars for repair, restoration, and customization projects. The programs also risk destroying classic, historic and special-interest vehicles, our American heritage.
 • Cars turned in for scrappage often barely run, or are rarely-driven second or third vehicles that have a minimal impact on overall fuel economy or emissions.
 • “Cash for Clunkers” programs will reduce the availability of affordable transportation and repair parts used by low-income drivers. It will also compete with the Salvation Army, the Purple Heart and other charities that rely on vehicle donations to raise money.
 • “Cash for Clunkers” ignores better policy options. If Congress wants to act, support for repair and upgrade is a better choice and a win-win for consumers, dealers, manufacturers and repair shops. Significant emissions and fuel economy improvements can be achieved in older vehicles through relatively simple and inexpensive means: repaired/replaced exhaust systems, tune-ups, etc.
 • We hope we can count on you to reject “Cash for Clunkers.” Thank you for your consideration on this very important matter.

I agree. If we don't try to protect our hobby now it may not last much longer with the democraps in power! I've already taken action on this and the response from my state's crappy representitives was dismal! A bunch of blather about cleanig up the air and our streets, etc. But here in Taxachusetts they keep getting elected. NOT BY ME!

I dont think it will hert that bad some cars are junk.I think if someone has a car they know is still good to restore and worth more than scrap metal they will sell it to someone who wants it.my2cents

Like pastortom1 said,"this is the tip of the iceberg." After this they will be after our cars running or not. These turds are already planning on controlling talk radio stations when Omarbama goes into office.

Always want to blame when it has been going on well before dem power, talking trash here doesn't do any good. I have done this letter twice to pelosi as everyone should and write all your reps (I have). Let your voices be heard like in the election when the people spoke about what they Didn't want anymore and we will make a difference. The collector car hobby is a economic force in it self that does wheel power and alot of tax dollars. They (polititions) just need to be reminded once in a while.

two things seem a bit odd in all this. First, there is no mention of the actual piece of legislation, such as the bill, or the location of the clunkers wording. second, I doubt very much they could get anything to move before 1/20/09.

Regardless, hit your local lawmakers hard with this.

Every single piece of clunker legislation has come from the tree huggers, and the democratic party. It has nothing to do with them being in power.

It's not a blame game. It's just a fact that some don't care for.

The legislation is out there, and has been for years.......but THIS one preys upon the idiocy of the American people (or what they SEE as our idiocy).....Like turning in guns for cash, and thinking it cuts down on crime....Turning in old cars for cash will consume MANY historic automobiles along with the trash, and ESPECIALLY in this recession, and it's NOT GOING TO SAVE THE PLANET........have you also considered where the cash will come from? You don't honestly think the Gov't actually HAS this cash in reserve, do you?

Bottom line........Your cars and the hobby are in great danger........They want them off the road and sentenced to life in your garage or on a trailer. Simply reminding the politicians of our feelings won't change it....not when they are out to silence the opposition......pardon the expression, but you're gonna have to raise a little "hell" on this one and get involved a bit deeper than the norm.

This "Cash for Clunkers" bill has been around before. It's nothing new. Thing is, like someone already posted, I think it's mainly for junkers. I'm sure they aren't giving much more than about $300 for a clunker, so anyone who has a car with anykind of potential will sell it before they take $300 for it to be crushed.

Well, it's going to be interesting to see all the details......but the talk is to allow the donor to receive cash help in a down payment toward a newer car.....I don't think $300. would be taken seriously by the general public........They're probably talking about much more.......and it will likely pertain to cars that are currently registered.

The clunker legislations have included, at times, even restored classics....that's how detached from the American mainstream and blatantly stupid some of these legislators are. We're not dealing with rocket scientists here.

Contact your legislators regularly....not just once.....we need to shout them down to be recognized. They want change. Remember? Believe me, it's comin'.....unless we get real mouthy about it all, and all across the nation at the same time.

I am against such legislation, but I also tend to look at the reality of it all.

The reality is, only some schmuck would turn over a real classic. This bill isn't like the others, where old cars were required to be junked. So the real problem is the average joe who doesn't know what he has, if its a classic. But thats a bit of a stretch as well, since the reality is most of the iron we drive and seek to protect is not in the hands of the average joe that would simply dump it in a scrap yard. Go a step further, whats to stop the average joe from trading in the "clunker" to a dealership that gives him a great trade in allowance? And whats to stop them from dumping the clunker in a scrap yard?

In the end, if we want certain cars to not be scrapped, we have to be vigilant on our own, AND be able to "rescue" the cars that are worth something. In the end, its not the political crap that takes its toll.... its the fact that we don't act on our own to save the "clunkers". Right now, I'm looking for the chance to save an 89 LeBaron Coupe with a blown engine and decent body. All the Darts I know of are safe and secure.

I have seen various forms of this legislation around for years. Fortunately, the more sane in Congress have been able to strip the bill from legislation or prevent attachment to legislation in committee. This was first brought up by the enviro-whackos years ago to rid the streets of pre-catalytic convertor cars.

It also bugs me that a number of not-for-profit "humanitarian" organizations are advertising on the radio to take your "junker" for an income tax write-off. This is just as bad because, essentially, taxpayers are providing the money to buy them up.

Forget about e-mailing to Pelosi or any other of the "true believers." They are on an ideologic mission. The ones that might be swayed are the various committee members who actually represent average Americans; unfortunately, the Dems have stuffed the committees with "true believers."

People who are into older cars as a hobby already know well the value of having old junkers lying around. Where else would you find an obscure part that is not being manufactured? Imagine that an old farmer might have a bunch of vehicles sitting on his property, not knowing the potential value to a hobbyist. He hears an add about getting cash or a write-off and he cleans up his property at the same time. No more barn finds.

Keep the *&%^$@# government out of our lives!!!
