Check out my build.. I had messed up hinges, I finally got fed up and modded my hinges, no more springs, smooth unassisted opening..

Word of caution...

3 days ago I was closing the lift gate on my minivan. Then it slammed down shut. The upper right lift strut OEM PLASTIC swivel joint that rides on the pin shattered.

The strut was at full extension and got sandwiched between the body and the lift gate, 2 nice dents in the body and the lift gate now.

I bought replacements and they had metal swivel joints. I'm guessing the manufacturers realized, "oops, plastic not good"


All I'm getting at is get high end struts with metal swivels and be sure your mount points are reinforced and heavy washers are used when mounting the pins

The struts I got are metal on both top and bottom.
