I think so too... on my A-body the shifter is slightly behind the mount, and the reverse rod passes underneath the crossmember.
 
this out of my Coronet .....the shifter mount goes in front of the mount on a B and behind the mount on an A

after 70 B and E had a dual mount for use in either or

Partial VIN with 8A - from a 1968 model produced at the Lynch Rod plant & they only produced B bodies there that year.
