In case any of you are interested, here is a link to the story John Hughes wrote for National Lampoon magazine that became the movie National Lampoon's Vacation with Chevy Chase.

Oh, and for those that don't follow the link and read the story, here's a little bit of trivia: The original Family Truckster was a 1958 Plymouth Sport Suburban Six.

a pair of startled guards approached the car. Dad rolled down the window and grinned. “you better hope to god that the russians aren’t flying plymouth station wagons, ‘cause they’re invincible!”
 
This story is pretty awesome. Nice to see some of the elements made it into the movie.

What I liked about reading it is the fact that no matter what happens the son absolutely thinks his dad is awesome. Even when he shoots Walt Disney.
