I was just looking over my fender tag again and punched all the info in on a tag decoder. I had a few letters wrong because of the rusted away lettering. All my G's look like C's to the naked eye. I snapped a photo of the tag with my iPhone 5 w/ the flash on. All lettering shows up very crisp and clear. That's when I discovered that they were G's.
I have very good vision. But the HD and touch to focus of the Iphone with the flash really improved the clarity of the old numbers and letters. Next time your having trouble with an old tag or vin plate. Try a pic with your iPhone or possibly another smart phone. If you don't have one, snatch up one of those pesky neighbor kids and get them to lend u a hand. Most likely they have a smart phone with a flash and maybe get another young gun interested in old cars.
