My 904 kicks down when I'm going through town. It shifts into second and then down shifts and the rpm comes way up.

I have adjusted the kickdown linkage from all of the way forward to all the way back and driven around the block...No matter what I do It still kicks down.

How soon should it kick down? Where should I have my linkage adjusted with respect to the throttle linkage pin?

Thanks.

Sounds like one of two things to me. A) the governor pressure is faulty, or B) the throttle pressure is faulty.
Neither of these is an easy fix. But before we get into it, A)what are we working on.B) Did it ever work right? C)Did the condition just pop up suddenly? D)or did it gradually get worse? E)Does it downshift 3-2, AND 2-1? F)always with decreasing speed?G) have you had the VB off?

In my vast experience; limited actually, and as a totally blind guess, I would suggest the E-clip popped off the TV internal lever, and the TV is no longer functioning, allowing the governor to run the show.

So your saying that it starts off in first gear, the speed increases some then shifts to second gear, then as speed increases more it downshifts back down to low gear? Do you have high gear at all? How about reverse, does it work correctly?

How about a little history on the car/trans. How old is the trans? How many miles on it? Has it ever had a fluid filter change and band adjustment? Has it been drove easy or rode hard and put up wet?

With the carb full open the trans lever should be just shy of bottoming out. Put a light spring on the linkage somewhere that pulls it away from bottom and toward the carb. The linkage must move freely and easily (like my ex) or it wont work right.

Move the throttle lever on the trans, it should move freely in the first part of its travel and resistance should increase as you push it back. If it just flops around or it sticky at all something is wrong and you need to pull the pan and look.

If the throttle valve feels ok your problem might be the governor. Pull the tailshaft and make sure the weights move freely. The governor is a pain to get to so I would make sure to eliminate any other possibilities first.

good luck
