I am looking at the year one catalog for an oil
tube and dipstick. What do they mean when they refer to a year and then say LA or B/RB?

They're referring to the engine series....
LA is the later model small blocks; 273, 318 340, 360 etc...
B is the big block 361, 383, 400 etc.
and RB (raised block) is the 440

Small block before 93 are LAs

Small blocks after 93 are magnums

B motors are 350, 361, 383 and 400

RBs are 413, 426 and 440s

actually the LA showed up in 64. The 273 was the first. But the 318 LA didnt come till 67

True dat...I often overlook the 273 because of it's lack of popularity!! LOL!!
