Maintenance like with everything else is key. The water where I live, the only way it could be harder is if it was frozen. After burning out lower elements every few years I decided to flush tank once a year. Pain in the *** Job but 8 years still on same lower element. That scale builds up, buries the element and it burns out. Works for meget a tankless... look into it....upfront cost is a little more...but the savings will catch up on the back end over the years..they have come a long way. The stainless steel heat exchangers are warrantied for 15 years.(providing you descale them once every 2 years DEPENDING on the hardness of your water. Very easy to do..never pay someone to do that. Sounds like we are all mech inclined in this group, and that process is straight forward even if your not a heating guy. Hwt's are not what they used to be. thin walled, thin chamber etc. The tankless will only heat your water on demand. The hwt's turns on and off all day long even when you dont use it. I stopped renting 20 years ago.
