Hi I have a 1966 dodge dart gt v8 4speed car. I have recently been going through everything. After doing the rear springs shocks and brakes I noticed an oil leak from one of the wheels. It looks like it is coming out of the axle shaft. It is a stock rear I think it is the 7 1/4" I know there is a seal in there, my question is with all of your experience, is this something I should take to a machine shop for? If so how much do you think it will run? Or is this something I can tackle with my rudimentary tools?

Thanks

Axle seal replacement is about as easy as it gets but I question the effort of doing it on a 7-1/4 (can we say super light duty) rearend with a car that's running a v8 and a 4 spd. If it were mine I'd look for an 8-1/4" rearend. You can buy them pretty cheap and they'll take a lot of abuse. Not as much as an 8-3/4 but you don't need an 8-3/4 with your little 273 and an 8-1/4 will cost less than half of what an 8-3/4 sells for.
