Need to replace the pinion seal on a 8 3/4 rear end..
What is the proper procedure ? 741 case .
Thanks !

First you want to order National Seal 8515N - that's the pinion seal for a 741 case.

remove yoke straps that hold the U-joint on and drop the drive shaft.
remove pinion nut and washer.
remove yoke.
remove old seal - some gear lube will come out.
let the gear lube drain somewhat so you can clean the seal surface.
put a little of your favorite RTV sealant on the sides of the new seal.
rub a little gear lube onthe rubber of the new seal.
install the new seal being carfule not to damage it.
install yoke, washer and pinion nut.
Torque the nut to AT LEAST 250 ft lbs.
connect the ujoint to the yoke
fill rear with gear lube and additive if ya have a SG.

Done.

I'm in the same boat and have a question... What tool should I use to remove the pinion yoke? Will a gear puller work or do I need something more stout?

Mark.

I've used a harmonic balancer puller .
