Let's revisit this clutch fan concept

I like the idea of putting a clutch fan in my 65 Valiant. Dan said a late 80's Toyota truck one would work. Since I haven't explored this ever, do I need the clutch AND the accompanying fan? Aren't the Toyota bolts metric and is the spacing different on the fan pulley? I watched someone replace one and saw this fan/clutch assembly. Any thoughts before I attempt this madness?

Well yeah. You need it all if you want it to work. I've never heard that they'll work on our cars, but if the "Dan" you speak of is our slantsixdan Stern, then, yeah, I'd take it to the bank.

The fan for a clutch setup has completely different mounting holes than a direct drive fan. So it's best to get the blade with the clutch unit, no matter what brand you get. Hayden makes the clutch fans on most Mopars, and other American makes of the era.

Yes, that Dan. And it's a 225 with a Griffin aluminum radiator, no AC, and by the ruler you can see how much space.

You should have at least 2-5/8" between the water pump pulley face and the radiator core. The clutch will be the closest part to the radiator core. The toyota water pump pilots the clutch mounting flange to keep it centered with a lip on the pump flange. Maybe the slant pump pilot or slant bolt size to a a drilled flange clutch will do the job? The replacement toyota clutches come with a bolt circle that is either slotted or drilled. Doable if you have the space for it.

I'm sure Dan will chime in with first-hand experience with this soon....

From the pic, looks like insufficient room for a fan clutch. The slant 6 is a long engine, & eats into available space for the fan.

Is there any advantage to just getting rid of the solid 4 blade slant fan blade assembly and going to a rigid 7 blade factory fan from a V8? It'll certainly move more air if it will fit.

Other than sounding like a B-17, no. I've never understood why folks want to try to reinvent the wheel on the slant 6. Admittedly, I tried it just for curiosity's sake. I went from the 4 blade to the 7 blade fan. It made zero difference in cooling...not that I was having any trouble anyway, my dumbass just wanted to do it. ...and I kid you NOT, you wouldda SWORE I stuck a vintage WWII prop on the front of the car. ...AND whether you believe this or not, I could FEEL the difference in power. The fan was THAT much drag. I couldn't believe it so it came right back off. Chrysler got these things a lot more right than most people think.
