lifting eye bolt size for 255 slant six

can anyone tell me the eyebolt size I need for the lifting holes on top of the 225 slant six motor. I doesn't appear to be 5/16 (too small) and 3/8 seems too large. the best I can tell, it doesn't look like a fine thread. Any help would be appreciated

3/8". I would use 2 3/8 bolts to attach a piece of angle iron with holes in it so you can pick a balance point you like.

thanks. that's good advice, I will make up a piece of angle iron to do the job. Do you know what the thread count is? I tried a 3/8 eye bolt I had laying around (coarse thread) and it wouldn't thread into the mounting hole

It should be coarse thread, it may be rusty or have crud in the threads.
