I have a 73 scamp with a 360, thermoquad carb and an edelbrock manifold, the stock carb linkage would not work with the manifold. so I got talked into buying a lokar setup.
I first tried to hook it up the way I would hook up a stock one, when I pressed the gas pedal down it was too loose. then somebody suggested I put the carb on the wide open setting and hooked up the cable, it was too tight, I coulnt move the pedal. this is going to be the third cable ( they're no cheap) im at wits end any ideas ? also what cuts stainless braid without fraying it ?

To cut the cable a little cleaner put tape at the mark where the cut is to be made. I use a hobby dremel tool with a cutting disc.

Go to a good Bicycle Shop(where they still fix bikes). By yourself a set of "Park Tool Cable Cutters". If no bike shop, you can probably get them on line, looking up Bicycle tools. They will cut cables clean as you can imagine. Then get yourself a few cable end ferrules, clamp them on your nice clean cut cable, so it dosn't unravel, and sit back, and admire it.
I sold my bike shop but I kept a lot of my bike tools, they come in handy.
H F also has cable cutters, but I don't know how they work on smaller cables, like Lokar.
Remember. put a cable end ferrule on the cable, before you do anything else, so it dosn't unravel.

Regarding the install and number of cables you've gone through...

Once you have the tools to cut (I used the Dremel plan myself), make sure you start by measuring and remeasuring the outer cable housing that the cable runs through, after figuring out how you're going to route it - gentle curves are best. Make sure to allow for the recess at the fittings where the cable housing terminates. DO NOT CUT THE INNER CABLE AT THIS TIME!!! You should be able to pull the inner cable out completely (assuming the end is not frayed at all on the NEW cable). Once your cable outer housing is at the right length, you should be able to install the inner cable back in, hook it up to your accelerator pedal, get the other end up to the carb where you can now start figuring out how much you need at that end. The part that connects to the carb linkage has some adjustment on it, and so should the bracket side as well (see image attached), so as long as you are close, you should be able to get pretty close to knowing where to cut. Swing the carb linkage back and forth and move the cable with it, double checking travel (make sure the outer cable housing stays put in the ends - masking tape or something to hold it).

Good luck.

are you sure you are mounting it to the right spot on the throttle arm?

if i read you right, the butterfly doesnt open all the way when you floor the pedal (or if you hook it from wide open, it wont close all the way)
that sounds like a bad angle on the pedal or the arm

and got any of those old cables left?
i could use about a foot or so (outer cable)
