Hard to say, may have been corrosion or a short, etc. The REAL dummy move was driving it long enough to do all the damage.

Or...buy a cheap chinese voltage regulator for your A body and watch it destroy your aftermarket electronics! I was reading over 17V when my AC ECU fried.
