Company I worked for closed 2 years ago. Have a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science. Been in IT all of my life. I'm now 57, and no one wants to hire a 57 year old IT guy. Been going back to college on Uncle Sams dime to get a degree in Mechanical Engineering, but I doubt if I will get a job in that field at my age, and I still have a year to go. Savings all used up. Have a duaghter in college and two more that will be going in a few years. Have gotten to the point where I will now have to start selling off my cars as a temporary fix, so its time to do something different.

I'm looking for a business to get into on my own. So I was hoping that those of you who are self employed and doing okay woudnt mind sharing what you do. It would have to be something that I could jump right into, and not require a certain degree, or whatever. Other constraints is I live in PA, and not close to a big city. Just small towns around here.

You can post here, or PM me, doenst matter. I just need to do something soon, or we will slowly wind up losing everything we have worked for over the years (including the Mopars).

I know you are far from the PNW but as far as I know Boeing is starting to hire again. Ramping up production and lots of people heading off to retirement means open slots that needs to be filled. May or may not be what you are looking for but its a good place to work if you can get in....good luck in your search!

Caddyguy, that's a really good suggestion. i have been in aviation since 1986 but I am not self-employed.
Boeing and Northrop Grumman are both possibles and they both have facilities all over the states. It's virtually a lock that Boeing will get the new Air-to-Air Refueler contract and it's worth more dollars than possibly any other contract in history!
Here's a recent story about the goings on with that:

P.S. And yeah...that's 35,000 MILLION DOLLARS!!!!

Thanks for the suggestion, but I want to stay where I am, and I am tired of working for someone else and always kissing ***. I've spent all of my career working hard and making someone else rich. And like I said, there is a lot of age discrimination out there, and although I have a ton of experience and have sent out hundreds of resumes, the younger guys always get the jobs.

Right now, I want to be independent, and responsible for my own future. I know it wont be easy, but I am prepared to jump in with both feet and do whatever it takes.

We are thinking alike! LOL
I have been scaring the crap out of my wife with talk of starting my own automotive service.
