Not an A-Body question, sorry, but rather...

I had to park my truck under a pine tree all summer while I was working on the shop, and when I went to bring it indoors for the winter yesterday I found pine sap "snots" all over the place. Not small spots, like it got "misted", but rather what looks like someone sneezed on the truck (and I'll let your imagination take it from there).

I have Bug & Tar remover, but it doesn't say pine sap on it, so I don't want to try that. Also, the truck is basecoat/clearcoat, so I don't want to be overly aggressive on it.

The interwebs is full of "tips" on this, but most of it BS, as far as I'm concerned.

Any help?

Thanks in advance!

Jim

This really simple. Hand sanitizer. Trust me. Put a dab of hand sanitizer on it, let it sit for a few moments, then wipe it off with a safe microfiber. Don't overcomplicate this. This always works.

Hand sanitizer, as in the stuff that my wife has carried in her purse ever since Covid, or GoJo cleaner?

  • Stoner Tarminator
  • Goo Gone Automotive (NOT the household version)
  • CarPro TarX
These are designed for clearcoat and very effective for heavy sap.
Soften the tar with HOT water first.

And likewise, since hand sanitizer is mostly alcohol, I would imagine rubbing alcohol would accomplish it too.

Thanks!

Only problem is, the truck is indoors now (non-heated storage), and there's no way to get it (the truck) warmed-up, and/or having water not freeze on the floor of the space.

I'm also concerned about letting the sap sit there all winter.

I had considered that, along with isopropyl alcohol, but I've never done this, and I'm afraid of damaging the clearcoat.
I can't guarantee it, but I have done it on all of my vehicles for the last several years. New, old, good paint, not-so good-paint. If your paint rubs off with it, you have bigger problems and bad paint. It shouldn't damage your clear coat.

Yep. The Purell stuff and other brands. It's just alcohol, by more gel-like than rubbing alcohol, so it will stick and sit better on the sap.
Gotta make good use of all of it. I keep a small bottle in my vehicles for this purpose...and to sanitize my hands. Works like a charm.

Heat up a deep pan of water on the stove and use a big sponge/ rubber gloves . It will take a while if the whole truck is covered in sap . Then go buy a car cover.

Heat is your friend here.

Get a bucket of hot soapy water and a chamois.

If you have one, use a a heat gun or a plain ole hair dryer .

Warm up the area with sap on it, then, dunk the chamois into the hot water. Clean the area with the sap on it.

No need to go overboard with the water as the sap should come right off.

We have the same problem here in Canada with Maple trees.

Most over the counter cleaners will just smear the sap.

Cheers!

Wax and grease remover, possibly try some white vinegar and distilled water 50/50 mix

Which ever way you go, I would start with a small area, one that is not too noticeable first.
I've had good luck with Stoner's Tarminator in the past.
