Some outlets at the house are working, some don't. Yesterday the electrician said only one of the two 120 volt poles in the meter are providing power. He is supposed to return today and find the fault. All of this is new to me, being I'm afraid to work on any system more than 12 volts.

Stepson had on and off problem with home switches, lights, it turned out the problem was at the pole, the REA fixed it before he had to use a electrician.
Me too, not an electrician!

electrician should have pulled the meter and checked the line side to see if you have both legs coming into the panel. if not, it's the utilities problem (as long as it's not the entrance wires). call your utility, they can see if it's on your side or theirs

I’ve had problems with losing the neutral, which causes a problem where you need to have equivalent loads on each leg to get any power through, and where the voltage varied between 105 and 166 volts. The latter problem was something going on at the transformer on the pole. PITA, but nothing permanently damaged.

I had the same problem, it turned out to be a cooked neutral run off of one leg. Luckily my neighbor was an electrician & fixed the problem without a big expense.

Fixed, we had a wire fried on one leg behind the meter. We think maybe the wire hold down screw on that side was loose and it was arcing, no way to know for sure. Thank you for the above input/postings.

Glad you got it fixed.
I lost a leg on 220 coming out of my box to my AC one year in August, smoked the AC unit.
All on me, a simple breaker took a crap, but cost me an AC unit.
