I ordered MAin bearings for my motor and they are Full Groove. Top and Bottom. I thought they had mis-packaged them, but they are the correct ones for 1974 and on 360 motors. My question is Should I still Run them and just get a High Flow pump or get the ones with only half a groove?
 
If you run a high volume oil pump make sure you put a hardened distributor drive shaft gear in there. Otherwise a stock type drive gear with a high volume pump will snap resulting in zero oil pressure.

The good thing about full groove mains is the rod bearings get oil all the time where as with the half grooves they only get oil when the holes line up with the grooves.
 
Ya, I went to the local seed shop and they said that I should be ok with a Standard Melling oil pump, Is this correct?
But I was also thinking about doing some port work to the pump like this

"Basically the passage out of the filter (inside the threaded part) was enlarged from 7/16 to 9/16 and the internal passages smoothed and radiused. The high volume pump was not modified. "
 

Some guys buy two bearing sets just so they can have a full groove set. What's the part number you used?

As long as the crank has been remachined and not one with 80,000 miles, and your bearing clearances are within stock tolerances you should be OK with a stock Melling. Some will say that the mains won't last as long as there is less bearing surface to absorb load, but you should be ok. You're not towing with this engine right? lol!
 
I will say this..
So you have full grove bearings right?
Does that mean you have loose tolerances? No.
Did you increase the galley sizes?
So right on, I stand next to my recommendation.

Ya, Its been cut to .010 under so its been machined, I Just thought since the mopar book said to use a HV with them and I read that MOPER reccomended a HV with it That I should
 
If your seeking to minimize parasitic losses (read "racing only") you could get away with a standard volume pump. If you're endurance racing or running on the street, go HV.
 
Yep, and like everyone said, use a high quality (name brand) hardened oil pump drive shaft.
 
You won't run the pump dry unless you will be taching some high RPMs for long periods of time. But a deeper pan, such as a Kevko 6 quart (M301/M302), will add more oil which will allow the oil to cool more before it goes back up into the engine. The Kevko pick ups have nice fat tubes and large oil suction openings too:

I'm not gonna bang my head against the wall on this one, do what you like.
No hard feelings here.
Just think of the 25hp or so you will now be using to turn the HV pump @ 6000 and think about the heat you'll putting into oil when compressing it more.....
Then ask your self what your doing with this motor.
 
Im running the stock one, thats why I asked Would it really matter about full groove if my clearances are good. I just have to plasigauge to make sure
