Need a couple of rear # 5 main caps for my 340 build. Factory 1972 Parts book says 318 and 340 # 5 cap is the same part number. Would like to find a couple nice ones to see what fits tighter in the blocks cradle. Let me know.

They're different. The 360 has a smaller rear cap so the oil pan hole at the back is samller as well. You can see if you go and look up a oil pan gasket set for a 340 vs 360. Not sure what year the changes were made to the different pans. You could ask someone on here, they may know.
 
I HAVE ONE MORE REAR CAP THAT WAS A BOX MARKED 340. Sending 2 pics,let me know. Rusty caps off LA360 Mike

LA360 crank journals are larger dia. LA318-340 are the same dia. Oil pans wont interchange either.
