Ripping my car apart for a full restoration. I will be doing the majority of the work myself along with help from some very experienced and skilled people. I have a 16:1 manual box that is stock from factory with a ton of miles on it so I probably should have it rebuilt.

Is it a difficult task for someone who is mechanically capable?

Are there significant special tools required?

I can get the rebuild kit from Firm Feel for 100 with worm gear bearings and seals, however since its an important piece to the car is it better for me to send it to them to build?

Next to brakes steering and suspension is about the most important so I just am looking for catastrophic things that can happen if I attempt this myself.
