My early 70s engine in the 64 dart had a correct carb put on.. He thought the auto choke the car had was pretty much toast and put a manual choke on. I am still learning it but car still stalls a lot on cold acceleration. I don't remember my 64 Dart back in the 1st half of the 70s acting like this. OF course that was a different car and over 40 years ago. Is an auto choke ( a good one ) really a better bet? I live right off a busy street and can't be stalling out when I pull out onto it.

I realize we're all used to FI now, but still I need to get results more like I used to get.

A good-working choke is better than a bad-working choke, whether it's automatic or manual. A cobbled-up manual choke that doesn't work well and a faulty automatic choke that doesn't work well are both a damnuisance. See Electric choke kits and choke adjustment article, and carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download.
