Maximum Performance Package

1962 ~ 413

* Plymouth 413 'Super Stock'
* Dodge 413 'Ramcharger'

Originally released in April 1962 with either the 413/410 HP Package or
413/420 HP Package.

Literature states that this High-Performance V-8 Engine Package was called
'Maximum Performance'.

Nowhere in the early literature was it listed as a 'Max-Wedge'.

Bet it was maximum performance. Saw a 62 Dart with one ( just sitting there) and you could just tell it would EAT. Had a cool can and all that.

Max wedge was the nick name for maximum performance wedge.
1964 engines were labeled "Stage III". Contrary to belief, neither of the early '63 426 or the '62 413 were ever called "Stage I".

The August 1962 issue of Motor Trend road tested the Ramcharger option of the 413 ( rated at 410 hp). The 3450 pound 3-speed auto car with 3.91 ratio put up the following numbers
0-60 in 5.8 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 14.4 seconds at 101 mph

1961,1963, 1965 Motor Tread road tested the Imperial Le Baron (twice each over 5100 pounds both with 413s rated at 340 hp) and the Imperial Crown ( with a 413 (rated at 350 hp). The 3 speed auto cars with 2.93 ratio put the following numbers

Le Baron 0-60 in 12 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 18.8 seconds at 75 mph

Crown 0-60 in 10.5 seconds and the 1/4 mile in N/A

EL5,

That is corect sir.

The 'Max-Wedge' moniker was a nickname that the Magazine's and Racers
used to describe the Cross-Ram Wedges.

The Plymouth '413 Super Stock' and Dodge '413 Ramcharger' were the
correct labels for the 1962 Maximum Performance engine packages.

The valve covers for those engines brandished those exact labels.

The 410 HP {11.0 Compression} and 420 HP {13.5 Compression} engines
were under the same name 'Maximum Performance'.

The 1962 Engines used the {Casting #2402286} Cylinder Heads along with the #3447 Carter AFB Carburetors.

The 1962 cars were called Lightweights, yet they did not have any
Lightweight body parts. They were called "'Lightweights' because
they were the 'new' lighter model style cars for 1962.

Top 1962 Performances

'413 Maximum Performance'

The 413/410 HP engine was Chrysler's first Maximum Performance Engine.

Early in mid-season at a July 1962 Divisional Race @ Pomona, California;
Dick Ladeen ran a 12.71 in SS/S with a 413/410 HP Dodge Dart,
which set the 'new' SS/S National Record.

A month later in August 1962 and also @ Pomona, California;
Bill 'Maverick' Golden ran a 12.50 @ 112.40 MPH in SS/SA, with
a 413/410 HP Dodge Dart. Bill captured both ends of
the SS/SA National Record.

Also at the same event @ Pomona;
Dave Chevron clocked a 115.78 MPH in SS/S with a 413/410 HP
Dodge Dart, establishing a 'new' MPH Record.

And also at the same event @ Pomona;
'The Dragmasters' - Dode Martin and Jim Nelson smoked a 12.26 classed in A/FX with a
413/410 HP 1962 Dodge 'Golden Lancer'. This also was a 'new' National Record.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 413/420 HP {13.5-1 Compression} engine made it's
first appreance in July 1962.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

On July 15, 1962 @ Freemont Drag Strip >

This was the '1st' Stocker to ever break the 12.00 barrier.

At the NHRA Indy Nationals;

'Automatic' Dodge Dart in SS/SA, clocks a 12.37 during Class Run-Off's.

Jigs

As per Chrysler, there were 'no' changes on the 1962 '413 Maximum Performance'.

But, the Cross-Ram Intake Manifold had a 'minor flaw' in the casting.

There was some weakness between the Intake Manifold Bolt 'access hole'
and the Carburetor-base, at the front left {Driver-side} and back right
{Passenger-side} sectons of the Manifold.

Cracks developed in these areas.

The #2402726 early castings had no 'casting date' marked on the Intake, and these are the units that had the 'flaw'.

The 2nd castings for May 1962 had the same casting #2402726, but they now brandished a casting date.

These Intakes also were cast with the same 'flaw'.
