Refreshing the engine in 71 dart after 10 years...removed oil pan to find this....great Stuff...Sure glad it is made in the USA...

Huh. So, the flexing of the windage tray caused metal fatigue failure at the mounts? Or did I miss something?
 
Why are the nuts on the studs sitting so high?

Not the ones on the bottom of the tray holding it on, but the ones underneath those that set the position... I think that put the tray in the wrong position and helped cause the pressure on it to break... I would have set them lower so the pan could be tighter to the crank, from what I see from the pictures....

What else caused the pressure on it to make it break???

Or is there more to it from what I see???

Makes me wonder about the balance on that assembly. I also suspect the main caps are walking around in that engine. 10 years is a good run so, maybe metal fatigue is to be expected?
 
The engine is internally balanced........been assembled for 10 years spinning up 7000 rpm...
