I'm back from moose hunting. We had a great time and everybody got back safe. Now to the part you want to hear about. We filled all three tags in 2 days!!!
Opening morning was cool and very windy. It took a while to get to the stand as I am still battling a cold and the flu. I was in the stand about 10 minutes before legal shooting time. A little late for me. I started calling right away. I thought I heard something to my front left but wasn't sure. I called a couple of more times in the next 20 minutes with no results to speak of. I still kept looking towards my left as I thought I heard something a couple of more times. It was hard to tell with the wind blowing so hard. I called again to my right and instantly heard a grunt back to my left. The moose was only 100 yards to my left and in the trees. I readied the gun and waited. It didn't take long and he showed up in behind some trees. I could see his outline but didn't have a shot. More waiting and then he stepped into an opening. I raised the rifle and pushed the safety off and let him have it. The first shot was a double lung hit, but he still bolted. I got off 2 more shots, another through the chest and a neck hit. He dropped on the 3rd shot. In total he had run 25 yards. So that was it for my hunt. It took a total of 40 minutes. What I had shot was a 15 pointer with good size pans. After the skinning we got 648 lbs of meat from him. That was it for the first day.
The second day started out cold and calm. We had a good frost. My sister-in-law was seeing a bull from her stand but it was hanging to the trees. After about 45 minutes it stepped out and she hit it with 2 shots from her .270. That was the end of her hunt. She was very pleased with her 12 pointer and by the time we got it to the butcher we got 455 lbs of meat out of it.
My friend Ron went back to the spot my sister-in-law had been for the afternoon hunt as we heard more moose while we were dragging her moose out. It didn't take long, About an hour after he climbed into the stand he called out a nice 5 pointer. He hit it with a double lung shot at about 75 yards and it dropped on the spot. We dragged it out and headed back to the camp. By the time we got this one to the butcher we got 365 lbs of meat.
The party was on after that. I finally went to bed around 2:30am on Friday night. There were lots of toasts to each other, great story telling and general B.S. Saturday morning there were lots of slow moving big beads around. LOL
In total we got 1468 lbs of meat to be split 8 ways. (It takes lots of help on a moose hunt).

Here are some pics of my camp and the moose hunters with their moose.

Sorry you had to Ruff it. =) What a great hunt. Everyone got to harvest one. Nothing better than that.

Wow... Looks like a great time! The camp looks beautiful. Its nice to see that everyone got to bag a moose. You guys on the east coast are lucky to have such a large moose population. They are a beautiful animal and tasty too!

to bad the living conditions are so harsh there jack lol nice cabin. thats some nice lookin anamials sounds like you guys and gals had some good fun .the moose population must be strong in your area.many deer or bear near your camp?

Thanks Guy's,

Moose population is strong around my camp, deer is down a little but the ones we have are big. There are lots of bears around here.

looks like you had a perfect season! I think almost everyone this year filled their tag. Nice looking camp you have too....whereabouts is it?

Moose meat all around folks  Jack is back from another great hunt.
Congratulations on a great hunt Jack
The last time I enjoyed moose meat was about 20 years ago
Sliced thin and cooked in a skillet and made biscuits and gravy for
one of my best breakfasts I ever had...
After shooting a moose up there and tracking it with a good single shot
do you have to worry about bear getting to it before you do ?
or coyotes/wolves ? and can you carry a side arm ?
You knew I would be full of questions :D
I must say there black coats sure are beautiful
I need to fly up and spend a few days at your camp, what a great place to get away and enjoy gods country
Thank you for sharing this productive hunt with us Jack.

This is the kind of stuff that keeps us young

No side arms in the woods up here Mike.
I don't worry to much about the bears and coyotes to much. If I have to leave a moose or deer in the woods overnight I just hang my shirts, socks and such in the trees around the game. That seems to keep the critters at bay for one night.
Your welcome to come up anytime Mike. Would be glad to have you.

Jack

No side arms allowed here ether, but on my bear hunts way up in northwest Arkansas
in the mountains/goat trails I carry a 9mm, I watched a mouton loin/cougar stalk my cousin as he was set up on the other side of a river bed, I was about 100 yards away.
I could not call out to him and he had his eye looking down the mouton to the fast flowing creek, the cat stayed still but I watched him/her for over a half hour worried.
Then he/she turned and walked away the way he/she came in
That evening he said he could see me pointing at him...Carry, But did not know there was a cat hunkered down on some big rocks not 40 yards from him
these cats are like a ghost and unpredictable ... This was about 11 years ago.
I have not made that hunt in about 8 years.. its unreal to see a bear hanging upside down with all the meat and belt off, they look like a human.

Thank you for the invite Jack, who knows what a day could bring.

At the same time you were hunting moose, I was in China on a guided tour. A lot of our friends were going including my wife, son and me...17 poeple we knew plus 4 more we got to know for a total of 21 Acadians. We had a blast, great trip all round and the price was right. A lot cheaper than most people think...thank god.
Looks like you had a great time too Jack, congrats. See you next year!
