Just re-posted my '65 Plymouth Signet Convertible on Craigs list Sacramento for a $5.00 fee. The first two responses both sound suspicious/flaky as usual. One area code from North Carolina ("704") and another from the Bay Area ("408" San Francisco/San Jose). Both want my address to send me a "certified check". Neither responder has expressed any interest in a vehicle inspection. We'll see what happens from here.

I experienced similar crap. What I found is that "real" people want to engage; they want to call and talk to you, they want pictures. The scams just want you to agree to accept some radically different form of payment, where their "agent" will pick up the vehicle. It is a recognizable scam signature.

I used to sell stuff on CL, but I had to stop. It got to the point where practically all responses were scams.

They probably don't trust you if you have listed from Mexico.

Update: All three responses to my add came within 24 hours of posting and I have reason to believe all are scammers (only text communication, two offered to send checks, the third wants me to get some kind of window sticker report and gave me a website to use for such).

My online search found this advisory:
"When selling a car on Craigslist, watch out for overpayment scams (fake cashier's checks for more than the price, asking for a refund), fake reports (demanding you buy a fake CarFax/ASR report), escrow/shipping fraud, identity theft, and advance fees (paying you with a bad check, then asking you to pay a "shipper" or "mechanic"). Scammers use high pressure, excuse meeting in person, want to communicate via text/email only, and push for wire transfers or gift cards."

Sounds like scammers for sure. Don't make contact with that sort of responder.

If they don't pick up the phone and call you - they are generally not legit.

Ignore.

If the flag fits.....ignore it.

...or write a legible written response that sounds like a human being wrote it.

Odie, been there and down that. Block the scammer mf's and move on. I ended up sending stuff from CL to the FBI because I was threaten by a potential buyer who insisted that I took his money and never produced the parts I had listed. My last message to the scammer was "Bring It On" I have something for you!

Hehehe!!!!

I do that with the scam texts and emails about my unpaid parking tickets, and how they’re going to arrest me.

“Bring it on, MF’ers! You know where to find me! Bring it!”

Scam written all over it, I had a 2012 Ram tried selling and the guy asked when it was last serviced. Told him 1969 and he said I’ll take it, I’ll send the money on PayPal, But you have to pay the shipping fee and I’ll reimburse you on PayPal. I always tell them call me , they never do just text. Yours has scammers written all over it

Every single time I list something on craigslist-

in exactly 24 hours after the listing is posted I get (usually two) responses asking if I "still have the item", or if I still have______ (inserted cut and paste of the listing title).

For example- if I List "Snap on brand wheel balancer- needs work"

I'll get a reply- "Do you still have Snap on brand wheel balancer-needs work available?"

These are scammers for sure. My favorite one I've gotten so far said something like "I will buy your product (not naming the item I listed, just said product) and I have funds on hand. Send your bank info and I will do a transfer, then I will arrange for a transport company to pick up your product to bring to me."

Of course this is an approximation of their message, as I'm using proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. :)

Yeah....simply send your bank account info.

What could possibly go wrong?
