MRE (Mancini) SB 280/474 Purple Cam

Has anyone tried their take on the old Mopar Purple Cam? There’s a dooming black cloud over flat tappets these days. A friend of mine suggested it. He used to run the same spec one years ago when Mopar still made them.. I like a lot of people have a level of concern about buying new flat tappet cams. I don’t know who they use for a lifters or if that’s a MRE product also..

Thoughts? Or is the internet making it seems like failure rate is higher than reality as the internet tends to do.. something could have a 1% failure rate and make it sound like it’s a 99% failure rate.

the reports of cam death have been greatly exaggerated

check the criticals and break it in with some light(er) springs and good lube and you'll be fine & dandy.
 

I like the idea of that cam. I would call mancini and see if it’s the comp purple plus nostalgia lobes. Is it 233@.050 and 148@.200 ??
If so then I would be very careful on breakin and not use a 1.6 rocker ratio.

I had bullet regrind a summit cam to a similar 280 grind. An ultradyne cam. H31. 232@.050, 143@.200, .500 lift
A little slower lobes than than the ones that specify a .904” lifter.
 
This cam would potentially be put in a relatively stock 71 340 engine.. just wanted to give it a little more rumble while keeping the lift below 500 lift. This will have the OE shaft mounted rockers. It’s a stick car so needing a stall won’t be a thing in my case.
 
Oh their website says the SB cam is a 238@.050. Wonder if that’s a typo…

For the BB cam they say it’s 234@.050

Comp nostalgia cam has a split duration per their website and the Mancini spec has the same for intake and exhaust
 
I believe there were 2 causes for the great flat tappet cam scare. Manufactures transition to foreign (China, India ect.) Suppliers of cam blanks and lifter bodies of poor quality and the loss of zinc in motor oils. These days supply chains have improved and the availability of special formulated oils have taken care of the problems. I wouldn't hesitate to run a new flat tappet cam from a known manufacturer with the exception of COMP CAMS.
 
I have the MP version of that cam in a standard bore 1978 360. It sure runs strong even with stock valve springs. The heads are the #308s, I have dual 2 1/4" exhaust and a Holley 750.
