FWIW, Most of the distributors being sold by MSD, Mallory and Accel do not require an external box.

The MSD digital has pots that allow you to set up the advance curve so there are no weights or springs in it.

I have one on my 350 chevy and love it. Have an MSD 6AL box also. Got the box on Ebay pretty cheap and the distributor was new. Only problem was the instructions, they suck. I understand it now though, pretty cool stuff.
