The chrome trim ring depth is different. Also, the 70 are resin or plastic while the later ones are metal.

70 & 71 have the same chrome trim piece, it's 72 that differs. And On the 71 extensions, the mounting studs were cast into the extension.

so 70 was plastic, 71 was metal but both had the same mounting for the chrome trim? 72 changed to the new chrome trim mounting but still kept them in metal with the mount studs cast into the piece? My 72 have removable mount studs.

Yes.
70 were fiberglass/resin/plastic whatever. They Had removable studs.
71 were cast. Studs were part of the casting
72 were cast, had removable studs.
70 & 71 Share the same Trim piece.
72 is one year only trim piece.
