got a ford relay feeding a chysler starter. relay is mounted above and outside the blower motor area-next to the fender, battery in trunk on pass side, from there wire and cable runs across the firewall down to the starter, this makes it a little easier to install the starter and tti header, as they have to be done at the same time, together. no voltage reg., f.a.s.t. 2.0 fuel inj, set up. how do I wire the nuetral starter switch in this type" rig" #-o?? I have rewired the whole car w/ E Z wireing, and frankly it amazes me that everything works! I`m far from being an automotive electrician. I know there are a couple of you guys that are pretty darn smart! thanks ahead of time------bob

........do u have a nss on ur shifter in the car...if so..u need to use a relay.....u need the yellow wire that went to the factory relay to trigger the new relay u installed...then over to the S post on the ford relay...u also need a constant power to the new relay.....the ground from the new relay goes to ur nss switch ....then when ur shifter is in P or N it will crank..........as it makes the connection to ground.........at least that's how I think I remember wiring mine..........I only used a single cable to the starter from the ford solenoid and used a flat piece of iron to jump the 2 starter posts together.......kim.......hope this helps

Here's how I have mine wired, see picture... Replace the Chrysler starter relay in my picture with a standard relay as oldkimmer suggested:

Pin 85 = ground through NSS/Clutch safety Switch
Pin 86 = "Start" 12 volt line from start switch
Pin 30 = switched 12 volt line ("run" from ignition switch)
Pin 87 = to Ford relay

no chrysler relay, ford relay only, factory 727 nuetral starter switch. thanks for the replies, and any other ideas-------bob

You have three choices as I see it. If you have an aftermarket auto shifter you might get a NSS to fit the shifter

Otherwise, either go back to a Chrysler relay with 4 terminals or......

Search for a Ford look alike that fits...........

I don't remember

It fits some of the late 70's?? Early 80's?? AMC products. It looks like a "regular" Ford solenoid but it has one more terminal, a push on "bullet" kinda thing. So it has FIVE total.......

The two big battery / starter terminals

the IGN (bypass) terminal

The "S" "start" wire terminal

And the last one for the NSS

See if this works

ford 5 post relay sounds interesting. what wires go where coming out of the 3 post nss? not nessasarily worried about back up lights, they weren`t too bright on 68 barracudas anyway.
how about the 2 post nss? and a one post nss? probably won`t get back to the garage till tommorrow and have forgot what I`ve got, was installed by my tranny man when he built it.----------thanks, bob:coffee2:

............the center post of the 3 is the ground for start....so then with a 5 post I wont need the relay in my system cool .....kim...........

The 5 pin relay/ solenoid essentially works just like the Chrysler 4 pin relay. What that means is the relay coil comes right out to two posts

So if you use a 1 or 3 pin Chrysler switch, hook the center pin of the switch to the "5th" pin of the Ferd relay and the S terminal to the "start" wire coming from the IGN switch

If you use a shifter mounted switch with two terminals, you really won't need the 5 pin AMC relay. On that you would run your S wire from the IGN sw to the shifter switch, through the switch, and the new wire off the switch to the Ford relay.

All you are doing is switching in the hot side as opposed to ground side.

There may be other "insulated base" starter solenoids, but there are none that I know of that has the "IGN" bypass terminal like the AMC / Jeep solenoid

(The reason AMC/ Jeep used these is exactly why you are.........they used Torqueflite transmissions with a grounding switch, and needed to energize a Ford starter)

I can never remember what these fit. Go to NAPA and look it up in their "picture" book
