Need educated on 8 3/4 chunks

Do all 8 3/4 chunks have the same spline counts for the axles?

If not what is the difference in counts and where is the split in years?

Is there some gear ratios that wont allow a ring gear and pinion change?

From 1958 or so, They all had 30 spline. In all my years I have not found one with a different spline count. And I'm old!

Ok, that helps. How about the ring gear and pinion question? I am thinking I read this some where but it may not have been on the 8 3/4.

And as far as different ratios, 8 3/4 never used different carriers for different ratios. The ring gears just get wider and the pinion smaller. Ever see 5.13 or 5.58 ring gear? They weigh a ton.

It probably came with a 742 case. But 741 and 489 will work also. 741 being the least desirable but still plenty strong.
