I'm kinda torn between 2 cars I'm looking at. One is a 72 Dart swinger with a 440 and an automatic transmission with no paint for $3500. Other is a 72 dart swinger with the slant 6 and a manual 4 speed with paint redone and interior done for $4500.
I've heard the only way to really enjoy a muscle car is with a stick-shift, but then again I have wondered what the 440 would be like over the 225.
So tell me, which would you choose and why?

Need some pictures! Well put it this way, I tossed the 225 in favor of a 440. Never looked back! Its not cheap to do the slant to big block swap I can tell you that. If they used the right stuff for the swap, as in didn't slap it together I think you have the best deal there. Is the stick shift car painted how you like? Is the interior how you want it? If not, save yourself some cash and do the 440 car how you want it. Their is zero comparison between a slant six and a 440, just depends on what you plan on doing with the car.

Drive them both. Chances are, you'll fall in love with the power of the 440 over the slant. 440 auto beats 4 speed slant in my book any day.

Would base my decision on the condition of the body over what engine is in it, at the end of the day the structural integrity of a classic/muscle car takes priority over everything else. Then you'll have a nice platform to start with and a car that will be around for a long time.

Toss up you could make that slant six pretty cool with wheels and the right stance. Here was one I had for a while. Actually really enjoyed the car even with the slant 6

I would also think there may be room to deal on the price of both cars possibly.

Is the 440 car done "right"? Does it have transmission/rear end matched to handle the 440?

Generally speaking, body/paint/interior can exceed mechanical, but if you were changing everything on a /6 car (to drop in a 440 or some such), then that's a ton of work. You should find a donor car, if /6 is the route you take.

IMHO, basically, you're buying the /6 because it has a clutch pedal.

I had a '70 Charger back when I was in H.S. (80's) it was a survivor 318 I drove it everywhere loved the car had a/c factory radio that worked.I was trying to keep up with the Joneses put a 440 727 3.91 Never car ran liked a scalded dog,but I just never enjoyed driving it anymore! It just wasn't the same. Maybe the Joneses were trying to keep up with me?

I'm sorry, the poster on craigslist removed their pics for the 440 from craigslist about a month ago and the /6 post expired, so if they come back up, i'll post pics!
But i didnt know there was such a big price concern to swap a 225 for a big block if i decided to upgrade the motor, I think that reason might deter me most from the /6. The stick is painted kinda how I like it, its a sublime green, but I see so many green darts on the site, I'd probably do something different, maybe purple or orange if I had a choice.
Thanks for the input!

"440 VS slant. 440 all day long."
That's what I'm starting to think now, thanks for commenting!

I think so too. So you don't see a manual trans as much of an important factor?

I think both are pretty solid. That's a very good point though, too. What specifically do you think I should check on the car when i go out to view the cars?

Thats true too, I'm sure i could make it look cool either way, but nice dart! I like it.
And really? how much do you think I could haggle the price to?

I'm not sure, what gear ratio would be more suitable for the 440? But that's true, I don't want to put that much labor in if I don't have to.

I think you just summed it all up. I think I'm gonna go with the 440 over the clutch pedal. Thank you very much pgkeating.

I would take the one with the better body, is the 440 one done right or is it hacked up, wiring everywhere, is the radiator big enough in it, could be a lot of little problems with the 440 one if not done correctly.

Why not buy both of them and make one good car and then sell off the rest?
Try to get the best deal you can on both and fix the one that has the best body.
Just a thought.
