HI,
I am in the progress of patching in some spots on the body that needed attention. My car is all original, and numbers matching. The body paint code is GF3, Amber Sherwood Green. The problem I am having is when we ordered that color, it is a darker green than my car. If you do a google search of "1973 Plymouth Duster Amber Sherwood Green GF3" and select images, you can see two different color greens. My car is the lighter color green. Does anyone know a mixture code or more information to be able to match the color? I need some good advice from the painters in our group. Thanks

You won't ever get a "perfect" match only by mixing with a formula no matter what it is. The formulas have changed so much as paint lines have changed, there are also many variables that can come into play. If I was you I would go to a local paint supply store or a GOOD body shop and have them try to find a color in their color index chips. They can sort through all of the chips and find something BLENDABLE. A good painter will find something close and tint until perfect.

I have painted professionally for 17 years and there isn't any "old" car that I didn't spend at least an hour or more tinting the color to make it perfect.

Or most automotive pains supply stores will have a color gun that get's pretty darned close. The underside of the deck lid is a good spot to shoot for a proper color match.

The top example car you copied is mine. I can ask the paint shop if they have the mix codes. I must tell you that my mix does seem to have more 'gold' metallic sheen than I bet was OE.

When comparing the two cars remember the difference between inside vs outside light.

Dennis,

Thanks for checking. Any help to get closer would be great. Nice looking car, looks like my 73 Duster. Is yours a 6 cyc or 340? Mine is a six, no options, pretty much a base line car.

So far I heard that they shot my car with DuPont Cromax Pro basecoat mixed per the standard Plymouth 1973 GF3 Amber Sherwood Poly codes. I will post anything more if they have stored tint ratios.

The bumpers and bumper guards are rechromes by BumperBoyz from LA. I swapped cores when they came out to a big show meet in Charlotte.

Computer matching is the best way. Better to take the picture close to where the repair is being made. Most paint stores don't have color variance chips and formulas for the old colors. Like said , a good painter with access to a mixing rig could tint until perfect, but tinting is becoming a bit of a lost art and not a lot of jobbers will do tinting. The formula's are not the same as the old ones as the lead based tints and whatnot are not available. Damn close , but not always exact.
