I have a 440 bored .30 with a 509/292 purple cam. the heads I have on it are 4008452 casting. On the one side I can smell anti -freeze upon start up out the exhaust port. After it warms up the smell is gone. Does not leak water or use water. I think maybe the shop who did the head work maybe drilled one of the broken exhaust studs into the water ports.
.

I have an opportunity to get a set of heads with a 3462346 casting number and I need to know if those are a better set of heads or will it hurt me. Does anybody know the difference in these. Everything I come up with says they are about the same. thanks

They are the same basic head. The best way to find a crack in the cooling system is a $20 radiator pressure tester. You put it on the radiator in place of the cap and pressurize the system to 17psi or so with the engine cold. If the pressure drops, you have a leak. pull the spark plugs and turn the engine over at least two full turns and see if coolant runs out of a hole. If not, take the header off that side and inspect the ports and bolts/studs.
