in my 70 duster it has a few holes about 2/3" big and i want to repair instead of replace what gauge should be used...i thought about cutting out some floor of a junk car but i have some sheet metal thats i think 24..

You'll get a lot of opinions about sheetmetal thickness. Try to get it as close to the parent matal thickness as you can. This is not really critical, as long as you get good weld penetration you'll be alright. Just don't get ridiculous with it, like using 1/4 inch stock for a quarter panel patch. If the original steel on your car is 22ga. stock, and you use 20ga. or even 18ga., the world will not collapse from under us and only you will know the difference. Some of the patch work I did on my car is from thicker stock than the original. If anything, this might prolong any future corrosion, since the steel is thicker, it will take longer for rust to work it's way through it. If it's painted or undercoated it will take much longer for rust to form. This lower quarter patch is made from slightly thicker stock, and I had no trouble with weld penetration. Of course you can see it has not been welded in this photo, but it worked just fine.
