Need suggestions on getting a new alternator

Someone told me that I could put some kind of boat alternator in and that would take out the need to have a voltage regulator. Has anyone heard of this before and if not what kind of alternator do you suggest? I am asking for advice before I go out and get the wrong kind. Also I am on a low budget so keep that in mind. Thanks in advance for any help.

I think they are suggesting a gm one wire alternator,not my first choice as it would require fabrication skills to mount it and some rewiring may be required also.you can have the original alternator tested at a parts store for free and replace it with same if it is bad.
