new guy wants to know what is a 999

Would you let me know what vehicles would have had the 999 automatic transmission in them? While I was looking at 904's I thought I saw one with 999 on the bell housing in big numbers, but had no idea of what it was.

My understanding is that the 998/999 is a 904 with a couple changes, a couple extra clutches and a lower first gear. There could be other differences that I am not aware of. It bolts up the same as the 904.
As for vehicles that had it, not sure of all of them. I have an old cop car ('89 Gran Fury) with a 318 4 bbl and 998/999.
