I've seen some mixed things on when installing a new oil pump. I got a 360 and just for good measure I got a new standard oil pump from Melling. I will be priming it... Better on the block or on the bench? And I've seen a few people mention they take apart new ones to clean them. Is this standard procedure or is there a way to clean it without having to take it all apart? First complete engine build with all new parts, making sure I'm doing the right things. Thank you!

Nothing wrong with taking it apart and smoothing edges or removing potential burrs..
1st off.. Everyone does it their own way.
That said... i draw oil through them before bolting them on. They're pumps.. as long as they're wet primed, they will draw immediately. A then you have assembly lube, for more then just rotating it as it goes together.
.Rock on.

Always disassemble and clean, unless you were at the factory putting it together that day. Make sure the bypass isn't stuck/sticky. De-bur as needed and check tolerances with a depth mike or feeler gauges and straight edge. As far as priming, usually a moderate coating of STP on the internals will help it pull prime during the pre-lube procedure.

According to my service manual, I'd need to take out the small plug and cotter pin. According to 'How to Rebuild the Small Block Mopar' book he doesn't show taking off that plug. I'm assuming then the above manual is just taking it out for servicing sake yes?

If you remove the relief valve, be ready for the sprAng to possibly shoot out when you remove the cotter pin and plug. You just want to be ready for it. I agree with the others. It's certainly not a bad idea to at the very least disassemble the pump for inspection and cleanup.

Always clean every new part before installing. Look what I found on a "NEW" pump.
The two cover bolts ( red sharpie) bottomed out before contact with the cover. Ran a tap thru all to correct that problem.

I once "ported" a HV BB oil pump for a friend of mine with a big stroker motor. The BB oil pump passages has some right angle turns, IIRC. He loved it. He said the oil pressure gauge acted like a tach. Super responsive to RPM. I can't give you a long term review, because the car was stolen, never to be seen again.

I have always used Precision for oil pumps
They take Melling pumps and blueprint them.
Very reasonable, worthwhile, and good insurance
