Too much rust in the old tank. Decided to go with a new one from Classic Industries. Old just popped right off at the rubber grommet. Trying to install the new seems impossible without putting fuel pipe in the grommet first.

The car is only on jacks stands and I'm on my back trying to wrestle it in place using a jack.

Since it's a fastback, it means taking apart the back area to access the he fuel pipe. Just wondering if I need to??

Unscrew the tube from the quarter panel so it has some play in it.
Lube up the end of the tube and the tank seal- Vaseline, general purpose grease, whatever. Should slide right together with a minimum of finagling. Install the straps, and re-attach the filler tube to the quarter.

Spraying or wiping some WD-40 on the tube also helps gets it into the grommet.

Took off the rubber. Even removed shocks for more room. I've been wrestling with it for hours with only bloody knuckles to show for it. I can get the flat baffle on the end of the filler pipe in but that's about it. It just won't go in.

Probably going to resort to pulling the filler tube. Lot of work taking apart the interior to access it. Oh well

You using the old grommet or a new one? I had to the use the old one as the new one was too small.

So I took the new grommet off the tank and tried sliding it on the filler tube, barely made it on. Tried the old and it slid right on. It's cracked a bit but I gave it a try on the new tank and it went right in first try. Guess I will have to see if it leaks.
