Hi Guys,

was at Hockenheim Race track yesterday with some buddies, there was a dragster Test and Tune session and public race.

I checked some engine bays and the guys running nitrous had these purge lines with a solenoid valve, i asked one which purpose does it have but he could not explain. I saw that a guy used this in the pre-start during waiting to get into the staging lights.

Can you tell me the purpose of the purge valve in the Nitrous System? Is it there to empty the system if you don´t want to use it?

Thank you!

regards Michael

The purge is used to get the liquid nitrous right up to the solenoid. The liquid causes the cooling (like A/C) when it changes state to a gas. The heat in the engine bay will cause the the nitrous to turn back into a gas after a while, so you need to purge out the gas right before each pass. With out the purge the car will run rich (and slow) until the liquid from the bottle works its way forward. It looks like it is just for show but it is necessary to make a good pass.
