no 1st gear

So I took the four speed out of the car and it ran and shifted fine with a Hurst shifter. Now I reinstalled and 1st/2nd lever is jammed. I took the linkage off and manually engaged levers and1st/2nd is not moving except into neutral. I can shift reverse and 3rd/4th and engage it manually in neutral with no problem.
I was thinking take the side cover off? Isnt there an adjustment procedure for the over?
Any tricks> ideas.
1967 small block 273 with 833 4 speed.

Take a look at the link end that bolts to 1 and 2 you might have It upside down I did this on rev and every time I put in rev it would jam 1 and rev

I finally took the cover loose and realigned it. Cover was binding it. I was dreading pulling the trans out.
