The rear, in My 64 Falcon, Sprint, whines at around 55 - 60 MPH. It has a few hundred miles on a, new, Motive Gear, R & P - 3.80 ratio, Ford 8" posi. All other parts are new, also. --- Can it be adjusted, to help to lessen the noise - or - is it too late ? -- I had a, new, US Gear R & P ordered, but UPS, apparently, lost it, and I'm tired of waiting. -- If He adjusts it, will I need to break it in, again ? -- Comments, other than "get a Mopar". -- :) --

A couple of hundred miles won't do any damage to the gears, assuming you don't hear any grinding noises. If it turns smoothly by hand, then readjust it to the correct pattern.

There has been some complaints about the newer Richmond gears, lately.

supposed to readjust after 500. Maybe just an adjustment. Raise rear and check backlash by turning tire gently back and forth, You should notice any excessive backlash. spec was .008-.012 measuring at 4" so a 24" tire should 'play' at about .048-.072 at the tread. Pinion pilot bearing........? "The pinion pilot shaft is a high-wear item and the leading cause of noise. Examine and measure this shaft per the Ford shop manual before going any further."

A ring and pinion will whine when you let off the gas if the gears are too far apart, and whine when you accelerate if the gears are too close together.

Yup, that’s why all the old dodges (64) or older with 3.55 and above whine. They had total disregard for back lash back then. Kim

--- I've heard this, before. -- As I said, previously. If it's noisy, this time, I'll live with it.

UPDATE -- I picked up the rear, today, and ordered, another US Gear set. -- The Guy that was going to work on the rear, has cancelled His order, for THE US Gear set.( The one floating around, somewhere, with UPS) -- When I get the new set, I'm going to, another, local Guy that does set-ups. -- If this one whines. I'll have to live with it. -- As has been said a 3.80 ratio can be noisy, but I like that ratio, because I have a AOD trans, and when in OD at 60MPH the engine is at a little over 2,000 RPM. -- I'm glad that I am a bit hard of hearing.

when you get it back, check the gear mesh pattern. that will tell you a lot. I wouldn't put any (unknown)pumpkin in an axle housing without checking the mesh pattern, first.

as stated in the last post ,,, you have to do a pattern check to make sure that the pinion depth shim is correct ( with proper backlash)-- after that the preload on the pinion bearings must be correct as well ( 8-15 used bearings -- 20-25 new bearings ) if the fellows doing your set up do not check/set either of these procedures find someone who does ---
these are two of the biggest mistakes made by people when setting up a ring and pinion -- and must be measured correctly for a proper set up -- if you are told by someone that " i can tell by feel the backlash and the pinion preload are correct " pick up your parts and walk away fast ---
close only counts with horseshoes and hand grenades or if you are stuck in the bush and have to get out asap.
post pics of your gear pattern and what your pinion bearing preload is set at.

Latest -- Not good. - I ordered the Gears from Summit, via phone. - ships direct from US Gear. The Summit website says est., Ship tomorrow, - I asked the agent to check to see if it was in stock, at US Gear. She put Me on hold - came back and said that it is in stock. After 3 days, and no tracking number, I called Summit, late in the evening. The agent told Me that He would call US Gear the next morning, at 9 o'clock, and He would call Me with the answer. -- No call around 9:30 A M, so I called Summit at 11 A M. I told the agent the story, and she put Me on hold, and called US Gear. She came back to Me and said that They (US Gear) were out of stock, and the estimated ship date would be the end of May. Also, She said that She didn't think that the previous agent called US Gear, because the Summit System show the inventory, currently at one unit.. So much for Summit, and US Gear. For now, after another adjustment, I'm putting the Motive Gear set-up back in if it's noisy, I'll live with it for now.

for the 8 inch Ford US GEAR ring and pinion try Quick Performance in Ames , Iowa they should have it -- don't have the number handy but they are on e-bay etc. should have a better price than Summit and probably free shipping as well.
