Numbers matching?

It's all ball bearings nowadays...
On the machined pad on the side of the block just above the pan rail.
Pass side pan rail would have teh VIN stamped in it.
The numbers on the front of the engine, designate, plant built, year, size, 10000 day date of assembly, unit that day. They WILL NOT tell you if it's the number matching engine.

Here... Keep in mind this block is upside down. Pass side right about where the rear of the motor mount would be.
What are the numbers if you don't mind my asking.

If there are no numbers present on the machined pad, then what you have is a warranty replacement block.

You can try looking on the left rear top edge of the engine and corresponding transmission/bellhousing. That`s where mine was found, I`ve got an early 340 so it may not be relevant, but you can give it a look.

I think if you had documentation that it was a warranty replacement block then it wouldn`t matter at all, and the added value would still be there. It is better than having a non-matching numbers block.
It has some cool options from the fender tag like EV2 (Orange) paint, J45 Hood Tie Down Pins, J81 Rear Spoiler - Wing Type, Dual Chrome exhaust Tips, V24 Performance Hood Treatment w/Engine Callout, V6X and V8X Stripes to name a few, It also has the Black paint on the cowl and around the windows and doors. I am just wondering if it is worth fixing up? It's in pieces in my garage right now...

Your car sounds like a fantastic car for saving/restoration. It`s got all the whistles and bells that people look for in a muscle car and being the last year of the "HOT" 340`s makes it even more special. I would definitely restore that car with the utmost attention to detail! Nice find!!!
The first thing I see I need is a front bench seat, the back seats are black and orange plaid. Does anyone have one or know where I can find one? The guy I bought it from said he put 71 Cuda bucket seats in it which they do look like (highback) maybe a trade will be in order.

The more you describe your car, the more valuable and unique it sounds. Find somebody who really knows their way around these cars and get some help restoring it with someone who`s been there. Your car restored correctly has great potential.

if that fender tag actually matches the car, i would definitely restore the car. a warranty engine isn't that big of a deal. it sounds like this car came with some good options.
Not necessarily a warranty engine. Blocks/engines could be bought over the counter. Unless you have some documentation supporting a warranty claim and the block still has the warranty replacement tag, it's likely an over the counter replacement. Bottom line... IT'S NOT THE #'s ENGINE!
Look on the side of the block for a casting date. What are the numbers on the drivers front of the block just below cylinder head deck?
Is it a 3 speed on the floor?
Sounds like a cool car and similar to one that a member found a few months ago. Post up the fender tag info/pic. I for one would love to see it and 70-71 Dusters are my thing.

I agree with you crackedback, that blocks/engines could be bought over the counter. But I have never heard of, or seen, a warranty replacement tag on the block. Do you have any reference to this claim? Info/pics? :dontknow:
