Oil Capacity

Simple enough...stock 340 oil pan, how much oil should I be putting in it?

5 qts with filter change.

Well that makes a difference. I think my dipstick is off.

And if the filter is already in and full of oil? 4.5?

I have a stock pan and filter. I wanted to check oil level so I drained the motor and refilled. I put in 4.5 quarts since the filter was already full. With the oil cold, it registers on the dipstick but below the fill mark. So what's the deal, is the dipstick wrong or is there not enough oil. I'm a little afraid to run the motor to bring it to temp for fear of starving the engine.

The dipstick is wrong, heck its so old maybe a different one was swap years back, maybe the diptick tube when replaced on a rebuild was not driven in far enough..maybe the tube is the wrong length--who cares. On every engine I had I change the oil and filter, give it 5 quarts, run it and once off for an hour take a file and scribe a line right where the oil level is on the dipstick. That is now your full max level

The afermaket tubes never seem to be right on
