***Opinions for an extra 66 Valiant Hood***

Hey guys,
I have an extra 66 Valiant hood from my parts car and I was using it as a backup piece. I am now thinking of painting it flat black/black out like what moparlee has on his Valiant. I was thinking of putting a hood scoop on it as well just so I can mess around with the idea of putting the M1 back on and some extra carb spacers for when I take it to the track.

What hood scoop would you pick?? I like the Hemi Dart style scoop.

As far as painting, this would be a good practice project as well since I have never used a paint gun before. I was thinking of just taking a DA sander to it with 120 or 150 grit and shoooting it with primer and then flat black to seal it. Nothing perfect. Honestly, I'm just trying to find things to do since my painter still has my car.

I would start out with wet sanding with wetdry 220 and a block to find any damage.
120 and 150 may be a little harsh.
The Hemi Dart style scoop would be my choice
Then sand down with wet 400 grit and paint away sir. :headbang:

I to have an extra hood for my car. But I am going with a max wedge scoop. I'm waiting for some pics of a scoop someone has for sale from this board. If it falls through then I might get a 5" tall one and just say to hell with it.

The hood had been painted before and is peeling up in places. So get down to 400 and shoot. Sounds good to me. Where's a good place to buy a scoop?

I personally like what moparlee has done with the Demon scoop. He must of done some fancing work to get to fit on the lines of his hood as it looks good, and its not to big.
You could even try a wide hood strip like on the demon, instead of a blacked out hood.

I have the same scoop as moparlee on my '64 Barracuda. All that's really necessary to mount it is to mark & drill the holes. The scoop will fit the hood fairly well. When I mounted mine I thought there would be a problem with the front center stud & its' boss on the scoop so I cut it off. After I had the scoop bolted down it looked like the boss would not have interfered with the hood at all. I probably could have added a washer as a spacer. The front of the scoop has a curved up section to clear the crown of the hood it was designed to fit. This is enough to clear the crown on the Valiant/Barracuda hood. There will be a bit of a gap there but it's easy to live with or it could probably be built up with fiberglass if you wanted. It's the same for the back side. There is a very slight gap between the hood and the scoop on each side of crown in the hood. The scoop could be finessed a bit if you wanted but it's not bad just as it is. Here are some pics of mine, as well as a pic of the hole we cut in the hood.

Dave, either the Demon or Hemi style scoop would look good on there, although I'd personally lean toward the Hemi one.

If the paint is peeling on your spare hood, sand it right back to bare metal and install your scoop. Once that's installed, give everything a couple of good wet coats of Epoxy primer, bodywork and color sand as required, up to 400 grit as mentiond,and shoot your black.

i looked at the max wedge one and it looks cool too. I think I'm torn between the wedge and the hemi now. humm.

I used a semi-flat,not flat.
JC Whitney has a selection.They have a six pack hood.

Now I'm really diggin the black since I will have a black convertible top as well. Oh yeah I guess I could do the hood pin kit as well. I like this Dr Jeckyl vs. Mr Hyde concept I've got brewing.
