Opinions on poss. purchase of a 340 block

Hey guys,

Found a guy near by that has a 1970 model 340 short block for sale. He said it has been used as a race engine and has somewhere around 12-1 pistions one of which has been cracked. Does not appear to have any damage to the cylinder walls, it has a steel crank and a roller cam. He said that the lifter galleries had been bored for the bigger roller lifters??? Does this motor sound like a good one to buy to try and make a good street motor? I would replace the pistions, but would you have to stay with a roller cam setup, if so what would be a good streetable roller cam to get? It also comes with an aluminum intake, no heads.

Also, he said one of the ears near the bottom for the transmission bolts has broken off.

sounds likes it has been abused and what is the bore on the 12-1 if its 60 over your looking at a block that wont be rebuildable again i would look for another exspecialy since it has a ear broke they can be welded if he has the other peice but not durable what is he asking for it
 
A magazine trick showed to take some fixed metal rods, and cut them and dress them to the sizing of a standard bore 340, and then 340 + .030 and so forth. Use a micrometer to make sure the length is precisely .030 over, and then run them in the bore to see if the bore is the side he says. If they are loose, then it is not .030 over.
 
340 blocks are rare and any you find today will probably be bored atleast 10 over. If I were restoring a 70 model 340 car I search farther and pay more for a better specimen. For a general application.. there are decent 360 blocks still available. Either way I'd let him keep that one.
