Friend and I were talking about steam and locomotives, and whether some/ most all were "condensing." So I did some searching and came across the explanation of a
"jerk water town."
Turns out this would be a tiny town, with probably unscheduled / infrequent train stops, and no water tower.
So the train crew would have to go to a creek, well, and "jerk water" with buckets for the tender.
