Is their such a thing as a 904 tranny with overdrive that will fit an a-body? prefferably a 1965 barracudas.

How bad do you want it and how much are you willing to spend? Checked with Keisler, and they use a GM 4L60E transmission in their kit. Don't know about you, but I will do without before I'll use so much as a bolt from a GM parts bin. Couldn't get past that to even ask the price or suitability for the early A body.
Gear Vendors has a kit that will work for the early A (I called and asked) and they are asking $2495 + shipping. You have to swap their kit for the tailshaft on your transmission, do a little hammer clearancing on the tunnel, shorten your driveshaft about 14 inches, and wire it up (on/off switch). The kit uses the stock mount and crossmember.
Third possibility is a Mopar 518 swap, but there is a bit of cutting involved and you have to come up with a tranny crossmember. I'm sure this has already been kicked around on this forum. Hope this helps.

Mopars OD version of the 904 is the A500. Before I was a Mopar guy I was a GM guy and I would not use a GM trans in a Mopar for free. GM does not build any auto trannys that are better than a Torqueflite.

I've seen the GM behind a small block before. Thats a personal choice. The A-500 is said not to fit in so easy. But, if you can cut and weld, you in!

Big drawback to the A500 is they we only lockup transmissions. And as such there is little if any selection of performance (or even very durable) converters. A518's were 727 based and non-lockup versions are out there. Otherwise only a little bit of surgery is needed to the rear crossmember and floor pan.

Any good converter company can build you a good lock up converter. The A500/518 are a tight fit though.

Ive been suffering with these same thoughts for a long time. Getting ready to get the 69 cuda bacck soon and need drivetrain. I have seen other posts and read up on the od conversions too. Basically from what ive determined you have to decide how much its worth too you. The A518 can and will work good but you need to modify the crossmember area to fit it in. It is not that extensive from some of the info I collected. I have a good detailed instruction w/ pics. If you get a 5spd Keisler you need to do the same. The Keisler Auto will fit with out mods but its expensive and they use a GM. I have been working with my trans guy to price on useing an Ultrabell adapter to a GM700R4 OD. He thinks he can make it all work and I can install without cutting the car for about $3000 or less.

What does Keisler or other people do about the neutral safety switch when using a GM trans? or do they just by-pass it and now you don't have one? If I used a GM trans at all it would be the 200-4R and not the 700R4 because it is a stronger trans.

The Keisler is a 4L60E (700R4) which is the next step up from a 200R4. If you went the Ultrabell route, you'd have basically the same thing.

Mopar Action did a couple articles about swapping an A518 into a Duster back in the late 80's. Nothing a guy with a welder couldn't accomplish pretty cheap.

Being an old GM guy I will tell you that the 700R4 is not a step up from the 200-4R it is quite the opposite. The 700R4 started life behind S-10 pickups with the 2.8 V6 and is considered a light duty trans. The 200-4R was intended for heavier duty applications and was also the trans used in the Grand National Buicks and behind diesel motors. The 200-4R also has the same basic dimensions as the TH400 so it is a very popular swap for replacing that trans if someone wants the extra gear. If Keisler only sells the 700R4 then I would steer far away from that conversion.

i would never consider a GM tranny in my car,,,,but i have read people that have tried it say they have to cut and modify the torsion bar cross member,,,not a good choice if you are still using torsion bars,,,
